For Kids

Take a field trip without the trip! Let us come to your classroom and engage your students in one of the following outreach programs. It's education that's entertaining!

The Civil War Soldier

The program involves the participation of the entire class as they investigate the life of a Civil War Soldier. The students will have an opportunity to feel the textures of the fabrics that comprised the uniform and the weight of the gear that they carried. Students will draw their own conclusions on what it must have been like to carry these items during the four seasons without modern transportation. There will also be an opportunity for students to examine facsimiles of letter written by soldiers as well as experience what it was like to drill and be prepared for battle. Other aspects of camp life will also be touched upon.

To begin the lesson, each student will create a list of what they feel will be needed to start a new life in the Connecticut Western Reserve. Students will then compare their lists to an actual list from the early 1800s. They will then “pack” those items in a wagon space marked out on the floor. A discussion will ensue about the different items, what they are, and why they are needed.
